When it comes to looking for jobs, most people tend to turn to platforms such as LinkedIn and Indeed.com. However, in this day and age, social media has also become a powerful tool for those on the career hunt.
While many utilise the likes of Facebook and Twitter to find jobs, you may be surprised to discover that Instagram – which consumers primarily use to upload photos and videos – has also become a popular platform for job-seekers!
If you have an existing Instagram account, now would be a great time to polish it up in order to attract attention from recruiters and potential employers. Of course, if you’re loath to remove your holiday selfies and fan-edited reels of your favourite celebs, you have the option to create a completely separate account dedicated to your job search efforts (or to use purely as a digital CV).
The ‘Gram Game Rules
There are five ways you can use Instagram to help you find a job:
1. Follow The Pros
Similar to LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, companies have established Instagram accounts where they promote their businesses, offer insights into their industry and – most crucially – post job openings. Similarly, recruitment agencies have dedicated accounts which they use to scour for potential candidates to hire.
Start by following these accounts and network with them (more on this later!). You can also use relevant hashtags such as #jobsearch, #hiring, #nowhiring and #careertips, along with hashtags that relate to the kind of jobs you’re searching for – eg. #graphicdesign, #marketing, etc. – making it easier for you to discover job opportunities in your desired field.
2. Insta-CV
Your Instagram profile can now be used as your digital CV or portfolio – here, you can post photos and videos that showcase your work and expertise to attract potential employers. For example, if you’re an architect, you can upload images and video clips of your designs and building projects, both past and present.
By continuously updating your profile, you can highlight and keep track of your skills, experience and accomplishments; if you’re ever required to submit a résumé or portfolio, you can easily refer potential employers to your profile to see your work firsthand.
3. Engage With The Pros
Once you start following accounts belonging to professionals in your industry, now is the time to make connections.
Start a conversation by engaging with their content – such as liking and commenting on their posts – and sending them direct messages about how much you appreciate their insights and expertise. Don’t hesitate to ask them questions or seek advice on certain topics related to your field. As always, remember to be polite and respectful in your interactions.
Building relationships with industry insiders is important, as it can lead to mentorship opportunities, potential collaborations or even job opportunities down the line.
4. Show Recruiters Your Interest
Similarly, you should engage with recruitment agencies and companies that regularly post job openings on their Instagram accounts. Like and comment on their job postings, and send them direct messages expressing your interest in any open positions, as well as inquire about the application process.
5. Get Creative
Most job applications or interviews require its candidates to submit a video of themselves, in which they talk about themselves and showcase their personality. As such, Instagram is a handy tool for candidates to show who they are.
By using Instagram Stories, or by simply uploading tasteful yet creative photos/videos from your everyday life, you can give recruiters and potential employers a glimpse into your hobbies and interests. Don’t forget to use industry-specific or job-related hashtags to boost visibility and connect with relevant employers.
